Fire Department & Emergency Management

Who We Are

The Lewisville Fire Department offers two separate volunteer programs that both contribute to public safety and community resilience in different ways.

The Lewisville Fire Department Reserve Program is an essential part of daily fire service operations. Reserve volunteers are carefully vetted and trained individuals who assist firefighters during emergency responses, training exercises, and community events. Their support helps strengthen response capabilities and keeps Lewisville safe on a day-to-day basis.

In addition, the Emergency Management Volunteer Program focuses on preparedness, response, and recovery efforts related to disasters and large-scale incidents. These volunteers play a key role in supporting the city during emergencies and recovery operations. Depending on training and assignment, they may assist in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), support warming and cooling shelters, help manage donations, assist at Reunification and Family Assistance Centers (FAC), and participate in post-disaster damage assessments.

Beyond emergency response, Emergency Management volunteers also have opportunities to stay engaged throughout the year. They may support the Community Champions program by sharing preparedness information at local events, helping increase community awareness and readiness. Volunteers can also serve as role players in city training exercises, helping first responders and staff practice realistic emergency scenarios.

While both programs are vital to the city’s overall preparedness, they are distinct opportunities with different roles, training requirements, and focus areas, allowing volunteers to choose the path that best fits how they want to serve the Lewisville community.

What Do Emergency Management Volunteers Do?

The Lewisville Office of Emergency Management offers both routine (non-disaster) volunteer opportunities and disaster-related volunteer opportunities, depending on community needs and ongoing programs.

In day-to-day operations, volunteers may support a variety of non-emergency activities such as community outreach, preparedness education, special events, and training exercises. These roles help strengthen community awareness and readiness throughout the year, even when no emergency is occurring.

When a disaster or large-scale incident occurs, the Office of Emergency Management may also activate trained volunteers to assist before, during, or after an emergency. In these situations, volunteers provide operational support, public assistance, and community engagement under the direction of city staff.

All volunteer roles are strictly support-based. Volunteers do not perform emergency response duties, provide medical care, or make official operational decisions.

Non-disaster volunteer opportunities:

  • Community Engagement at Special Events – Volunteers support outreach efforts at city events by sharing emergency preparedness information. Participation requires active membership in the Lewisville Community Champions Program.

  • Exercise and Drill Support – Volunteers serve as role players or simulated victims during citywide drills and exercises, helping create realistic training scenarios for staff and first responders.

Disaster-related volunteer opportunities:

  • Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Support – Provide administrative and communication support, including answering phones, routing inquiries, and assisting with basic documentation and clerical tasks.

  • Reunification Centers – Help connect individuals with loved ones by assisting with check-in, guiding visitors, providing comfort, and supporting overall site operations.

  • Family Assistance Centers (FACs) – Support impacted individuals by welcoming visitors, assisting with non-technical paperwork, managing waiting areas, and helping distribute resources.

  • Warming & Cooling Centers – Assist during extreme weather by checking in guests, providing basic supplies, monitoring general wellness, and supporting daily operations.

  • Donation Management – Help organize and distribute donated goods by sorting items, maintaining inventory, assembling supply kits, and keeping distribution areas orderly.

  • Staging Area Support – Assist with basic logistics by directing arrivals, tracking personnel or resources, distributing supplies, supporting setup, and maintaining organization under staff supervision

What Do I Need to Volunteer?

  • All Emergency Management volunteers are required to pass a background check and complete applicable training. Some opportunities may also require active membership in the Lewisville Community Champions Program.
